Literature Text

This is a simple one-shot typed and written over the course of several days, is basically the result of my endless boredom.  Titled "Sunflowers", this story advocates love between two young boys, Ness and Lucas.  It is also my first fan fiction submitted...  and hopefully it's a good one.

There are also some Chapter 1 spoilers for MOTHER 3!  If you wish to not know what happens during that part of the game, click on the back button on your browser!  If you're fine, then go on ahead and keep reading.

I do not own Super Smash Bros., or any of its related franchises.  I wish can own a Mr. Saturn table, though.
Also this story is dedicated to my wonderful buddy, Mei.

A/N:  Ness calls Lucas 'Luke' sometimes.  I also apologize in advance for any one-sided attraction, spelling mistakes, and grammar errors.

Lucas sat at his desk, pencil in hand and quietly at hard work, writing.  He never really liked writing, but he did it to inform his friends back at Tazmily or to respond to any fans that happened to give him letters of praise and support.  Lucas wasn't writing anything to his friends or fans, though.  He was writing in his diary, the one thing he kept his deepest and most precious secrets in.  Peach, the kind and motherly member of the Smash Bros., suggested that he buy and maintain a diary to help relieve his stress.  Being the timid boy he is, Lucas decided to take that advice and has been writing in a small, sky blue book for almost three months now.

"Oi, Lucas!"

Lucas squeaked in surprise, but soon calmed down to see that Ness was standing at the doorway, crossing his arms in concern.  Lucas blushed, leaned back into his seat and continued to write.

"Aren't you coming down to play some soccer with Toon Link and the others?  You said you would last night... it's a really nice day out, too."

Lucas fidgeted in the chair he sat in.  "Not today, Ness.  J-just tell them to play without me."  Ness sighed and stared at his roommate with disbelief.  Lucas looked up at him and saw that the black-haired youth was drawing closer to the desk.

"Hey,"  Ness tried to give a strong smile, but it quickly faded.  "Well, you've been so down for a few days, we just really want you to feel better, especially me.  You're my best friend, Luke."

"I'm fine, really.  I, uh... I'm going to go downstairs for a snack and drink."  Lucas slowly sat up and walked over to the door.  "You need anything while I'm there?"  His jaded gaze averted to Ness, whose eyes were intently fixed on the blonde boy.  At times like this, Ness wished that he really could read the minds of people, not just animals...  he wanted to venture into the boy's mind, to see what was troubling him so.

Ness snapped out of his stupor and realized Lucas asked him a question. "No, I don't need anything," he proceeded to lie on his bed and stare at the ceiling.  "I'll just be right here."

Lucas gave a small smile to his friend and shut the door on his way to the downstairs kitchen.
Ness continued to lay there on the bed for several minutes, until he sat up to stretch and noticed Lucas had left the book he was writing in, no, his diary... completely open.

Ness thought to himself, 'Maybe... just maybe, if I read his diary... I could figure out why he's so glum.'  He shook his head violently at the thought.  'No!  He's my friend, and that's an invasion of his privacy.'  He quickly turned around and faced the opposite wall of the desk.  After a few seconds, he slowly began to go against his 'good-boy' demeanor.

'Well Luke DID leave it open.  If I just read the page he has out, he won't notice.  Sure, that'll work.'  Ness quickly shot out of the bed and stood over the desk that the book laid on.  'I'll just run to the bed if I hear any footsteps!'  Silently cursing at himself for his actions, Ness cautiously leaned in and began reading the open diary's left page.

Dear Diary,
I still miss my friends and family back at Tazmily.  Ever since this tournament started, I'm becoming more and more worried about how they're doing.   Boney, Kuma, Duster, Dad...  I can't visit them right now, but I can deal with that until the holidays.  However, there IS one thing I miss more...  sunflowers.  I've grown to love them very dearly, because they remind me so much of my mom.  Sunflowers were always her favorites.  After she was buried in the town cemetery, I would look at the pretty patch of those flowers planted to the right of her grave.  She would cut some from a patch near our home, and so our house smelled of sunflowers almost all the time...
I really want to see just one sunflower, or hold it close to me...  I feel right at home and all right with the world when I'm exposed to them.  Even a picture of one calms me.  Sadly, there are no sunflowers growing around here, or on the mansion public garden.  It's like my mom's very essence is in that flower.  If only I could touch one, I would feel as good as new...

Ness frowned as he finished the last sentence, but felt relieved.  'At least I know how to make him feel better now...  What's this?'  His eyes fell back to the page, noticing another paragraph, filled with scribbled out words and phrases, unlike the last one.  It seemed like Lucas was extremely nervous writing it, his handwriting on the paper was becoming loose and sketchy..

Also, I feel bad for distressing my friends about all this, especially Ness-kun..

Ness blinked in surprise at the name Lucas wrote, as it wasn't what he usually called him.  He recalled learning something from Marth about japanese suffixes, but shook the thought off and continued reading.

I really wish to apologize to him, but I'm having such a hard time talking to him lately.  I look up to him, Ness-kun is my first and best friend at the mansion... and someone I admire.  He's really nice, funny, and so optimistic, even when he loses...  and I can't even say anything to him anymore.
Lately I've been feeling really strange around him.  My stomach feels like it goes in a knot, my face turns red... I've never ever felt like this before.   So, earlier today I asked my good friend Samus if there's anything wrong with me.  She laughed at what I told her, but what she told me wasn't very funny to me;

Based on what she said... I think I'm in--

Ness furrowed his brow at the end of what Lucas wrote.  'Jeez, got cut off..  This is juicy stuff.'  He put his hand on his forehead and scolded himself.  'What am I saying?!  I just read his diary!  I feel like such a bad person for doing it,  but I want him to stop feeling so down..'

"Ness," a soft voice cried out from behind the door, "C-can I come back in?  I locked the door by accident."  Ness soon recognized whose voice it was.  'OH SHIT, that's Lucas' voice!'  He quickly regained his posture and proceeded to open the locked door.  Lucas stood with a worried expression on his face, with both arms behind his back.

Ness blinked and began to talk to his friend.  "You alright Luke?  Ya don't look so good."  He smiled and placed a hand on Lucas' shoulder, who looked at the ground.  "If you need to talk to somebody, I'm here to listen, okay?"  Lucas nodded but didn't say a word.

'I need to figure out where to get a sunflower...  maybe some of my friends would help.'

"Lucas..  I'm going to go talk to my friends."  Ness patted him on the back and began to walk out the door of their shared room.  "Please try to cheer up, you... mean a lot to me."

As Ness left and shut the door, Lucas grabbed the pen he laid next to his diary.  He gasped as he noticed the book was open.  "Oh no... Someone tell me he didn't read it..."  Lucas scrambled to shut and lock his diary, while heading out to knock on the room next to his.

"Miss Peach, I need to talk to you!"

Summary:
Lucas has been depressed and down lately over the past few days. His best friend Ness and a few others (Toon Link, Pikachu, Kirby, Red/Pokémon Trainer, and Jigglypuff) are greatly concerned, and don't know the cause of his sudden sadness.

However, when Lucas accidentally leaves out his diary for Ness to eventually read, the young Smashers come up with a plan to help Lucas be back to his old, more cheery self.

My first fanfic.
I write weird D:
I usually don't write stories. I mostly write reports and essays, so excuse any strange dialogue placement.

Part 1 of I don't know. There's more, but I'd like to keep it in parts since it's not really finished.
